Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council with support fromWelsh Government has embarked on an ambitious programme to transform its town centres. By taking a place-led development
approach and doing development delivery the Local Authority hopes to secure a positive future for its town centres. Delivering a sustainable mix of different uses will be key to creating vibrant town centres that are relevant, welcoming, and inclusive to resident and visitors alike throughout the day and across the year.
Each of its towns has unique townscapes and are nestled in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. The plan is to create places that meet the ambition of building sustainable town centres that support active and healthy lives within urban neighbourhoods that are compact and walkable, organised around mixes use centres and public transport, and integrated with green infrastructure. To do this, Placemaking Plans are being developed that set out the vision and future strategy for each town.
With our Placemaking Plans we now have a series of core ambitions for each town along with a diverse range of projects and investment opportunities for the next 10 years. These ambitions include:
- Better connect Blaenau Gwent’s towns with the assets that surround them
- Safe and accessible streets for all
- Create ’20-minute ‘neighbourhoods where key destinations are highly accessible and strengthen each other
- Improve Active Travel Connections and public transport facilities
- Embrace the digital and technological revolution with world-class connectivity
- Create an environment where new businesses can thrive, and existing businesses are supported to grow
